"It is only in our decisions that we are important."
Jean-Paul Sartre
Life requires us to make decisions virtually every day of our lives. Some are merely garden variety choices that can be made without much deliberation. There are others that prove a little more difficult and require some serious soul searching. Then, of course, there are the doubly tough decisions that really put us to the test.
Regardless of the size or scope of the decisions we face daily, we have to make them. Not only do we have to make them, we have to make them in a timely fashion. Big or little, easy or tough or even somewhere in between, we've got to make a decision and then go with it.
We have to be willing to pull the trigger. And pull it now.
"Be willing to make decisions."
T. Boone Pickens
Yet some people perpetually sit on the fence when it comes to making tough choices in life. Rather than just make a decision and stand by it, these folks constantly straddle the fence. Forever indecisive and insecure, they are hesitant to commit to anything. Instead of making a choice and then making something happen, they vacillate, hesitate and waver all over the place.
Big decisions make them nervous. But even the smallest decisions can make them tense and uneasy as well. Never quite sure of what they should do next, they decide to do nothing. And nothing gets done. It seems like these people are simply incapable of making a firm decision and sticking with it.
But that's simply not the case.
"In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing."
Theodore Roosevelt
Each of us has the capacity to analyze the various choices we must make. No matter how big or important any decision may be, we have the ability to make even the toughest of tough decisions. We just have to make them. And there's the rub.
Making tough decisions - and then standing by those decisions through thick and thin - takes unyielding willpower. And we'd better toss in a healthy dose of self confidence and gritty determination while we're at it. When we're making decisions, we have to be accountable for our choices. If we blow the call, it's our fault. Not the butcher or baker or candlestick maker, but ours alone. We have to take the heat.
And many people cannot handle the heat. So they climb back on the fence and hide.
"You cannot make progress without making decisions."
Jim Rohn
Being your best is about taking your best shot each and every time out. And that means having the courage to make decisions. Not putting them off, not waiting for a better time or place to come around; but making them when and where they need to be made.
Are you going to make some bad decisions? Sure you are, we all do from time to time. Mistakes are going to happen. But so what?
Are you going to make some poor choices? No doubt about it, that's just the way it goes. But what's the big deal? Poor choices and bad decisions can be corrected.
So what's holding you back? You need to climb down from the fence and get in the game. You need to get out there where the action is happening and get happening yourself. You've got to start making decisions - and keep making them. If you make a wrong move, fix it and keep on going. If you make a bad decision, find a better way and then get after it.
And make something happen!
You need to get bold, get daring and for goodness sakes, go get the life you deserve.
The Bottom Line: Get off of the fence and get in the game.
